Babagana Zulum, the governor of Borno State, and Bola Tinubu, the APC’s presidential nominee, appeared in a popular photo that fueled speculation that Zulum will run as the party’s vice presidential nominee in 2023.
Tinubu can be seen holding Zulum’s hands up in the viral image that is going viral on the internet and on social media.
Even some political and social media groups have begun to applaud Zulum’s selection as Tinubu’s running mate.
However, according to information made available to InsightnaijaTV, Tinubu is still debating whether or not to choose Zulum.
Earlier, this online news source claimed that Tinubu had narrowed his search to either Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State or his predecessor, Senator Kashim Shettima, despite having reportedly declined the option to select either Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State or Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State as his running mate.
When he returns from France, the former governor of Lagos is anticipated to speak with others before deciding between Zulum and Shettima.
“The race for the running mate for Asiwaju has been reduced to just two men. They are the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, and his predecessor, Kashim Shettima, who is the senator representing Borno Central Senatorial District. All things being equal, the running mate should emerge between these two men,” a source told newsmen.
Governor Babagana Zulum had stated in May 2022 that he has no interest in serving as a running mate for any presidential candidate in the general elections of 2023.
The governor declared that he wanted to finish his accomplishments in his second term and continue to give Borno State’s residents the benefits of democracy.
After becoming the state’s All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for 2023, Zulum made this known.
In order to clinch the governorship ticket of the North-East state’s ruling party, the governor received 1,411 of the 1,411 total votes cast.
Zulum, however, apologized to the candidates for the presidency who had offered him proposals for the job of running mate, stating that he wanted to focus on making Borno a secure environment for all residents.
However, it is yet unclear if Zulum will reconsider given the mounting demand for him to be selected as Tinubu’s running mate in the 2023 presidential race.
