Charles Oputa, Nigerian singer and activist better known as Charly Boy, has advised Bola Tinubu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), against running for president in 2023.
Tinubu had stated that he informed Presidential Muhammadu Buhari of his decision to contest the presidency.
But in a social media post addressed to the former Lagos governor, Charly Boy said all that Tinubu needs now is rest.
The singer also urged him to leave the presidential race for the “young shall grow”.
“My darling brother, for real, I think it’s time to hang ur bouts. You don try wella. God don bless you. Wetin again u want? Make we leave dis tin for our children, the young shall grow,” he wrote.
“A kingmaker must not become king. What you need now is to rest the way am resting as if I had ur kinda money.
“What you need now is ur beauty sleep. Ignore how your pocket is scratching you cos greed and good health never go hand in hand. One day I will pay u a surprise visit and we can ride on my scooter. One love bro.”
There has been controversy on Tinubu’s real age and state of health, most of which his associates have dismissed.
Charly Boy, while justifying the need for youth leadership, had earlier stated that he fears for the future of Nigeria.
“Anyone born after 1970 didn’t witness the Nigeria I was born into. I feel sorry for them as it has always been bad from then when we started this downward slide,” the singer, aged 71, said.
“I still believe the salvation of Nigeria lies in the hands of exceptional people who are among the youth.
“I’m not surprised that, when young people leave Nigeria, they blossom. Young people should stop feeling there’s nothing they can do because they have so much working in their favour technology-wise and in numbers.
“Our enemies will do what they always do from their old playbook. You can’t convincingly prove that the mindset of the 18th century can conquer that of the 21st. It’s not going to happen. It’s just a question of time.”
