President Muhammadu Buhari’s preferred successors may include Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Senate President Ahmad Lawan.
The President had appealed to the APC governors to allow him to choose his preferred successor ahead of the party’s presidential primaries on June 6
On Tuesday, Buhari made the appeal during a meeting with governors and the ruling party’s National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Following the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the PDP presidential candidate, a presidential source revealed that Buhari is torn between Lawan and Osinbajo.
According to the Daily Sun, a committee is weighing the advantages and disadvantages of choosing Lawan or Osinbajo, with the goal of providing President Buhari with informed recommendations on his return from Spain on Friday.
According to a presidential source, Buhari carefully stressed during his meeting with APC governors that his choice would be someone capable of driving his ideas.
He added that Osinbajo has also supported Buhari’s policies and projects, claiming to have played a significant part in their implementation by overseeing important initiatives critical to the administration’s strategic imperatives.
Lawan has also supported critical legislation and aided the President’s foreign borrowing policy, according to the presidential source.
It was learned that a lobby group would be raised in the coming days to work in the north and south, depending on who the President chooses between Osinbajo and Lawan.
The lobby group is waiting to meet with northern and southern elders in APC to solicit support for either of the two presidential aspirants.
