The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee has set the first week of September as the date for its emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
The NEC meeting’s September date was decided upon at the weekly NWC meeting that took place on Wednesday at the party’s National Secretariat, according to InsightnaijaTV.
It is acknowledged that President Muhammadu Buhari, the head of the ruling party, must approve the date.
The proposed date for the NEC meeting will be communicated to the President by Senators Abdullahi Adamu, National Chairman of the APC, and Iyiola Omisore, National Secretary.
The 90-day transfer of authority granted to the NWC by the party’s highest decision-making body during its 11th meeting on April 20 in Abuja expired, necessitating the NEC meeting.
A member of the NWC who wished to remain anonymous told The Nation that the party leadership is considering the first week of September in a conversation.
He said: “The NWC is looking at the first week in September. This date however is subject to the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari. The National Chairman and National Secretary are to convey to Mr President our proposed date for the NEC meeting.”
When pressed for a date, the insider responded, “We can not disclose a date at this time. The President will be consulted by the party leadership, who will also confirm the date with him. I am unable to provide a precise date because we are not informed of Mr. President’s activities. We need to discuss and choose a date together.
“We intend to have the NEC meeting before the commencement of the Presidential campaign. We (NWC) have to report our activities in the last 90 days to NEC and equally present for approval of the comprehensive campaign programme for the 2023 general elections.”
