In Calabar, Cross River State, a 12-month-old baby was burnt to death in a thatched hut during a fire.
According to sources, the incident occurred on October 9 in the Eta Agbor district of Calabar Municipality.
When an InsightnaijaTV correspondent arrived on the scene, the thatched house had entirely burned down.
Glory Etim-Akpan, the child’s mother, told reporters that her daughter was sick and that she had gone to a local pharmacy to get medication and pampers for her before the event.
While the candle light was glowing, the 19-year-old lady said she left the child, a baby girl, at home asleep.
“My baby was having a cough and catarrh, so I went out to buy drugs (medicine) for her and pampers. Before leaving the house, I lit a candle (and put it) on top of a metal plate in the room.
“I didn’t even get to the pharmacy when I received a call that our house was on fire. It was not up to 30 minutes that I left the house.
